Some of the Best Advice...

For your bleh days...

“Sometimes you just have to put on lip gloss and pretend to be psyched.”

For the days when people think you're a little emotional....

“Some people say, “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.”

For those days you get labelled bossy and controlling and really you're getting shit done...

"I just love bossy women. I could be around them all day. To me, bossy is a not pejorative term at all. It means somebody's passionate and engaged and ambitious and doesn't mind leading."

For when you need to reevaluate your body issues...

“You look like you look, and be comfortable. What are you going to do, be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That’s just dumb."

Nuff Said.

New Role Model: Mabel Pines

It's not everyday you can find your role model in a cartoon series but I have. Mabel Pines is one of the stars of Gravity Falls, a cartoon series. Along with her twin brother, they are sent to a holiday resort to stay with their uncle and also hilarity and fun times ensue. My favourite part of this show is how Mabel relates to boys. Also the way she dresses because we have a similar penchant for knits and skirts.

Things I Have Learned From Mabel Pines:

1. How To Trick Boys Into Liking You

This note is genius. There is no chance for a boy to tell you no and say you smell. Also it gives them lots of options to profess their amount of like. Taking this on my next date.

2. How Not To Let The Haters Get You Down

If this wasn't a kids show, I am pretty sure that note would say, "Fuck off, I'm fabulous". Which is really what we all need to do when people are mean and try to bring you down.

3. Find Your Personal Style and Own It

For reals, there is nothing I love more than a knit and a skirt. And luckily it seems to work with my body shape. Yeah for curves and clothes that flatter my waist. Life's too short to dress shitty.

4. How To Deal With Mean Girls

Kill those bitches with kindness. They hate that shit.

5. Just Believe In Yourself

No matter how much of a dork you are. As the movies and TV shows have taught us, the weird, quirky girl gets ahead too.

Truth

I was browsing Buzzfeed when I came across this post about some girl code wisdom.

Sometimes I feel there's a whole lot of girl-on-girl hatred and drama and most of the time it's related to or about boys. Not to say that all us girls just come to blows because boys are the only thing on our minds. But I can recount several situations where other women (particularly in the workplace) have tried to one-up, slut-shame, belittle and fight with or against other girls because there is a man nearby or because they think it shows a kind of strength to their male peers.I have always had a little contempt for women who rebel against chauvinists yet are still grown up mean girls.

And do not get me started on slut-shamers. Those bitches can sit down. So when I came across this post a few things filled me with the warm fuzzies.

Now let's talk about how much some boys can piss me off. I am not a naturally pretty girl. I got massive thighs and I'll always be carrying a little extra weight. Saying that I have come to love my body shape, curves are all kinds of amazing. Since I do not bring much to the party in terms of natural beauty and an amazing bod, I try and compensate in other ways. I dress well and I do my hair and make-up. I try to achieve a different look daily. This compared to girls who just wear tshirts and jeans and loose hair seems to guys like I am high-maintenance. I am not. I have got this shit down to an art and can get ready in 15 minutes. I just like to take a little extra time and effort with my appearance. It's basically like playing grown-up dress up and I am sick of being told I have too much time on my hands or look like a lot of work.

When I bring up stuff like the above, I get called crazy. Actually because all girls have a level of crazy - as do a lot of guys deep down - we all get labelled as insane. Sometimes we just have a little bit which most of us sane ones hide until you love us loads and won't leave us ;)

But enough ranting, here is probably the best bit of wisdom I got out of this post. Ain't that the truth.

Letters To My Children

I've always like the idea of passing down collective wisom and advice that you've been given or experienced to someone else. Obviously when it's done right it can be a great help. When it's unsolicited you run the risk of being labelled a nosy bitch who should keep her opinions to herself.

Under the moniker "Letters to My Children" you can rant and rant about all the stuff you learned and know and pass it onto your kids without sounding like a know-it-all. Which is something I really like. Under the guise of preparing your offspring for this world you can say what you want and no one can excuse you of being selfish. Which is awesome.

Now I don't have any kids and until Future Boyfriend comes along, those cute Asian babies we'll adopt are still a dream away. That however hasn't stopped me from preparing my Future Babies. Obviously I want them to stand up for their beliefs and be true to themselves and all that nonsense *but* more importantly I want to guide them through the little stuff.

So hear are my letters to my children...

...No one likes a smug bitch or a douche. Don't be either.

...Never be the car who has slowed down to look at an accident. It's common and it slows down traffic.

...Always be nice to people who serve you food. Just think of all the bad stuff they can do if you're not.

...Never save clothes, shoes or perfume for a special occasion. Make every occasion special. You'll regret never wearing all the pretty things.

...Learn to enjoy your own company. Seriously, sometimes all you need is a big bowl of pasta, fat pants and your favourite by yourself.

...Learn the words to the Beatles song. This will help on drunken nights out, pub quizzes and also it's some of the best music ever created.

...Go to the movies by yourself. On a weekday morning. Stretch out in the comfort of an empty cinema and chew your popcorn as loudly as you want.

...Girls, flats are for quitters ;)

...Never trust a guy/girl who wants to make a sex tape. And if you're the one who suggested it, we need to talk.

...Be nice to people even if you don't like them. It's not two-faced, it's being a bigger person.

...Learn to bake something particularly awesome. Like cupcakes or cheesecake or pecan pie. This is more for me in my old age and laziness than for your better self.

...Don't be afraid to dance. You may not have my skills on the dancefloor but that shouldn't stop you. And by skills I mean I can do the Footloose dance and the routine for Oops! I Did It Again.

...Do more things. Like bowling. I hated it when I was 10. I tried it again at 25. I didn't get better, I may have gotten worse but now I have an unflattering picture of me doing it. Memories.

...Make wishes at 11:11. Not sure why that time but just do it!

A Woman's Right To Shoes

For those of you who follow me on Twitter, you’ll know me as Tweets in Heels. For those who don’t, my love of shoes, particularly high heels should not be foreign to you. After all I literally write for shoes.( If you don’t believe me check out the blog I write for Bronx Ladies where I get paid in shoes).

In summary, I’m a big fan of heels.

Being blessed not only with curves and gaydar, I also am vertically challenged. Which means heels are my saving grace. I instantly go from knocking into average size people’s knees to knocking into their shoulders. Now as an avid heel wearer I must admit something. Even though I’d be nothing without them, there are times when these little beauties can hurt. I’ve found that I can usually manage a full day of heels without complaints. It’s what happens after I leave work that’s the problem. If I have a shopping errand, those fierce heels that have made my outfit start making me use four-letter words. If I go dancing and have not had the benefit of a foot massage beforehand, when you see me shouting my way through Don’t Stop Believin’ it’s really me trying to channel the pain somewhere else.

So when some angels dropped off this little number I was overjoyed.

Kiwi’s Smiling Feet are a gel cushions that can be slipped into your heels and can alleviate some of that pain it takes to look good. Those clever peeps have even gone one further by creating an entire range of gel cushions to treat several different areas that might that can be a tad uncomfortable.

I’ll definitely be pairing these handy little things with all my heels. After all, why should we gals compromise on style.

An Open Letter to Boys

We’re single girls and while we’re not on a serious lookout for love, we cannot resist the charms of the boys. Not all the boys as we have found out in our recent nights out. We know that it takes a lot of courage to go up to someone you don’t know and try to get their attention. We’ve done it too (once I went up to a beautiful man only to find out he’s gay – totally broke my heart) and it’s nerve-wracking especially when you think you’ll be rejected. So do not see this as only an open letter of advice to the boys in clubs and pubs who think “they’re the man” and can get any girl they want but more of what not to do list in case you were looking for a line.

Just so you know girls do not feel bad about turning down a guy who tries to chat you up with an awful line or gesture. Here’s a little secret, just saying hello and introducing yourself will do wonders. It may not work but you’re more likely not to get a drink in your face or have the manager ask you to leave. That’s right, harass us enough and we will go diva.

So I’d like to say a big Dude Please to the following types of guys:

To the guy who thought “I’m like Visa, I’ll take you places” was going to get him some action, dude please.

To the guys who think that by dancing close enough to us, we’re going to magically let you into our circle and become your love slaves, dude please.

To the guys who follow you around in the hopes you’ll turn around and say “You’re just what I was looking for”, dude please.

To guys who grab your hands and call you beautiful, not as bad as some of the others, thanks for noticing my looks but seriously, dude please.

To the guys who wear wedding rings, dude please.

To the guys who bite you, (this happened to Blue Eyes) that’s gross if we don’t know you and it leaves marks our mothers will see, therefore dude please.

To the guys who are drunk, you don’t make sense and more than not, spill your drink on us (it takes effort to look like that so blotch it up) so, dude please.

To the guys who wear mesh tops, Crocs or white Saturday Night Fever suits, these really bug me and I’m not sure what girl with style and class would want to get all up in that so there a loud dude please!
