All By Myself*

*Excuse the moany, feeling-sorry-myself title. This is not a woe-is-me blog post. It’s a bit moany but nothing so sad it’ll make the reader even want to do a razor-blade action.

In one of my favourite Sex and the City episodes Carrie and Aidan have just moved in together and it takes a little adjusting. Carrie then laments to the girls about how she misses so many things she couldn’t do before she had a dude hanging around her place. This in turn leads the other girls to reveal some of their private activities they love to do. Sometimes it just seems like there are some things that feel better when done alone like…

…going to the movies by yourself. Yes it’s awesome with a date but there’s something absolutely fabulous when it’s just you. Maybe it’s because you don’t have to pretend to like arty, clever movies and can see what you really want (One ticket for Fast and Furious Five please!) Maybe it’s because you can overload your popcorn with salt ‘n’ vinegar flavouring and no one makes passive aggressive comments. Whatever the reasoning, it is something to be relished.

…making a big pot of pasta and then sitting down to watch Julie and Julia. The story behind this is, one day one of my gays gave me a copy of J&J. He also instructed me not to watch it without a vast supply of food at the ready. Knowing the paltry ingredients in my fridge weren’t going to cut it, I bought some fancy stuff to make one of those creamy tomato-based pastas with lots of bacon and feta. The results were magical.

…playing cheesy music and cleaning the house. I’d love to be able to have someone clean my flat but for some reason I get a little joy from cleaning it myself. Maybe it’s because I use the opportunity to parade in short shorts and yellow gloves – once a fashionista, always a fashionista – but more likely it’s the fact that I was forced to help my mother clean our house and I haven’t gotten out of the routine yet. Saying that I’m not really a neat and tidy person and there are days when my sink is flooded with dishes. But once I get that feeling, helped on by playing the best and worst of the 80s, I’m in my zone. And all of a sudden I cannot stop until there’s no mildew on the bathroom tiles or until all the wax has been cleared from the mantelpiece. I'd like to admit I'm a cleaning machine but after years of living with her, that title will always belong to my mother.

Monday's Mantra

This week has lots of promise.
I believe that sometimes friendship is all you need.
I’m addicted to disaster movies, swimming and butternut pie.
I wish I would learn my lesson and wear sunscreen.
It’s sucky that I will be sporting a sunburnt forehead at a fashion launch.

This Week I...

…went to watch Grease at the Odeon Cinema.

Please note the very Sandy-esque outfit.

Skinny Bitches were very lucky to be invited to a very fabulous event this past week.

The Dealio: The Pepper Club Hotel in Cape Town hosts monthly-themed movie and dinner evenings. Guests are treated to dinner, wine tastings, drinks, tasty treats, prizes as well as a goodie bag. Not to mention getting to enjoy an awesome movie.

The Venue: The Pepper Club can be found in Loop Street, Cape Town. Think movie-style hotels. The kind where doormen greet you instead of wondering why you’re there. With all the pretty people drifting in and out of the lobby, I half expected Richard Gere to pop out somewhere and offer me some money to spend some time with me. It’s that classy a place! Also it has a very fabulous bar called the Paparazzi Bar which apart from great drinks, has huge containers filled with sweets, chocolates and chappies gum; drinks and sweets, my kinda place.

The Paparazzi Bar

The Theme: One of my guilty pleasures is dancing movies. Seriously no matter how awful the dialogue, I’m talking to you Step Up 3D, I can handle it as long as there are some awesome dance routines in the middle. So I was beyond words happy when I found out that we’d be watching Grease. Even better, the whole theme was centered around Summer Loving.

The Venue

The Event: The event started with some old-school soda pop, snacks and wine from Leopard Leap. We were then ushered into the cinema and settled in with some popcorn and coke floats.

Skinny Bitches rocking it

The movie started and I’m not gonna lie, I sang along. Halfway through though the movie stopped. Luckily it had nothing to do with my singing but more with the amazing food awaiting us. That’s right, even more food! And even better, there was a waffle station with enough toppings to put you into a diabetic coma. I may have made more than one venture over there :)

The Waffle Station aka Heaven

Once we’d eaten enough and made sure the rest of the weekend would be spent at the gym, we finished the rest of the movie. Afterwards we were all told to look under out seats because there were some awesome prizes laying around. I was lucky enough to have one prize which is a pole-dancing lesson! Stay tuned to the blog cos that will definitely be an interesting experience.

I'm The Type of Girl...

…that thinks people have just got the title wrong when discussing the film “Sunshine”. In my head they’re talking about “Little Miss Sunshine”. It makes for very confusing movie reviews.

…when spelling things on the phone, says “A for ABBA”.

…that loves it when purchases are wrapped in tissue paper.

…that judges people over the age of 25 saying “My bad”.

…who will never walk under a ladder.

…that gets a thrill out of wearing red shoes.

…that makes wishes at 11:11.

…that will obsess over any nice gesture a guy does for or towards me. Mixed messages are the reason I am crazy.

…that believes in the Loch Ness monster.

…who gets goosebumps when someone cracks their knuckles.

…who counts going into the gym to pay your monthly fees counts as cardio.

…that believes most problems can be solved with a latte.

The Best Films of All Time Vs. The Best Chick Flicks

Blue Eyes and I decided we were going to get one of those 101 lists of movies you have to watch before you die.
