The Problem With TV According To Moi

TV shows used to be my escape from the world. While, when I’ve run out of cupcakes. So it saddens me that when I try to revisit a beloved TV show (i.e. spend a weekend re-watching it because I am broke and payday is a week away) I manage to find so many things wrong. So I have decided to compile a list of things my favourite TV shows have done wrong. And yes, it’s been a long-ass month of me having too little money and lots of time…

…The Gossip Girl Writers Think we’re stupid.

Nate probably thinking 1 +1 =?

There is this moment in season 5 of GG where Serena’s dad says her brother Eric cannot come home for an event because he’s stuck in Zaire. And then Serena corrects him  by saying “I think it’s called the Democratic Republic of Congo now”. Like she knew that. Her dress is literally cut down to her navel but we’re expected to buy that she knows where it is and that there’s a country called the DRC. Bitch please. The other thing that really makes me mad because I take the journalism world so seriously is that Nate is running a publishing company. Nate…I realise he comes from a world of privilege and connections but this isn’t an assistant position. He is the editor in chief. And he has yet to finish college. Or *not* fuck any female character with the exception of his mother on the show. Nice one.

…Carrie Planned Her Trip All Wrong.

This could have been avoided.

I have watched the final season of Sex and the City way too many times. And after all the shit Big has put Carrie through, she deserves a fabulous older ex-ballet dancer who can provide a happy life filled with new adventures, aka The Russian. So when they meet, he is a famous artist who hasn’t done a show for years and has infinite time to spend with her. He gets a new show in Paris and invites her to move with him. All of a sudden he is working all the time and not there for her every moment. So girlfriend who is understandably a little homesick gets all weird in his grill and then they break up and Big arrives, blah blah blah. Now if I were Carrie, I’d realise, hey my boyfriend is about to embark on an artistic comeback, maybe he needs a bit of space. I’ll move countries when he’s closer to the opening and then when it’s done we can carry on living our amazing lives together. See, problem fixed.

…Debra Messing Cannot Dress For Shit On Smash

Intervention starts now.

Her character is a successful playwright with musicals on Broadway. She is trying to adopt a little Chinese baby. She also has a double-storey house. In Manhattan. She can afford to stop wearing ill-fitting cardigan shrug thingys and palazzo pants. Also, enough with the scarves.

…The Other Carrie Is Clearly Not Allergic to Sulphur

Glug, glug, glug

So I have a slight allergy to sulphur. Which means I cannot drink more than two glasses of wine before I turn into a sneezy, red-faced wreck. I once drank an entire bottle of sparkling wine in half an hour because of boy problems and the result was not pretty. So I take my wine slowly. Carrie on Homeland does not. Firstly it’s pronounced Kerri which is weird in itself. Secondly, she drinks the stuff like it’s water. Taking big ol’ gulps like she’s been in the dessert and shit. I have never ever seen anyone do that to wine before. It’s just not right or fun. And I once lost a drinking game in Thailand and had to drink a bucket of other people’s beer.

Anything bugging you?

Dear Future Boyfriend, Part Seven

Dear Future Boyfriend part Seven

Wherever you are, you need to come out and make a move.

And that’s not because I’m getting sick of the single life. I actually dread the day I’ll have to stop spending my Friday nights with my Will & Grace boxset wearing nothing but my old college top and my fat pants. Or when I have to start sharing my life, feelings and even worse my food with a boy. It’s not because I’m ready for you and I to be together.

It’s because I want you to mark your ground.

Despite what I think about my thighs and that no one will love me with my frizzy hair, there turns out to a number of demographics that find me appealing. As I found out over this past weekend. As I parked in town to do some work stuff, I car guard told me I make all the men in Cape Town cry because of broken hearts. Later when I arrived home, a truck driver told me to be careful with my booty. When I was out, a homosexual told me I looked “Fierce” and snapped his fingers. But that happens all the time, I have my gays trained.

And then this morning, I was at the shops. Just doing my bidness when not one, but two gentlemen of an older nature looked me up and down and either made a suggestive gesture or comment. One was even with his wife. Yes it was unbelievably creepy and I should have said something. But a girl’s still got to eat.

So while you’re out saving humanity (tip: I’d really like you to be a human rights lawyer but I can also handle activist as long as we’re not poor) please consider that the future love of your life is being hit on by car guards, the gays and geriatrics.

This Week I...

….played Bitchy Bingo at Beefcakes.

Beefcakes is this awesome restaurant and bar on Cape Town’s pink strip. The décor is similar to a 50s style diner with booths and old school menu designs. There is also a lot of pink flamingos and sequined cowboy hats.

Along with Blue Eyes and Samma Designs, we headed over for some dinner and a game of bingo.

Beefcakes is famous for their burgers and some of the kinds include Buffy the Hamburger Slayer, Chilly on the Willy Burger, Slimmer Sue and the Greek God Burger. What’s even great is that you can have them in beef, chicken, lamb or ostrich. Other fabulous items on the menu include the Machos Nachos (which I completely devoured) and the Love-Me-Long-Time wrap.

Their cocktails were also amazing. I opted for my old faithful cosmopolitan which they made the way I like it, not too sweet and not too sour either. Other items I definitely want to try in the future are both the Nora Walker and Karen Walker cocktails.

Bitchy Bingo was hosted by Miss Lola Fine, a faboosh drag queen who did a roaring version of River Deep Mountain High.

For R20 you get to play four games with prizes including drinks hampers and meal vouchers. Sadly we did not win anything but we did have a fabulous time. And trust me bingo is much more entertaining when you have a female impersonator with a quick tongue and legs I’d kill for calling out the numbers.

An Open Letter...(Musical Addition)

To the people involved in the Fame remake. I absolutely loved the original. It was gritty, it was real and it still had dancing. Any movie with any type of dance sequence is automatically placed in my Top 100. I saw the trailer for the new version and felt a bit queasy. Were they going to take my beloved Bruno, Coco and Leroy and turn it into High School Musical. (Ps. I heart HSM. I just didn’t want Fame to become a carbon copy). Skinny Bitches went to see the movie last night and I can report back that we are okay with it. It wasn’t HSM but it wasn’t Fame either. Yeah for Debbie Allen. Yeah for Karen from Will & Grace. And a big yeah for the hot boys. Much needed. But what happened to the street dancing? Leg warmers and my absolute favourite part of the original, when the graduating class sing The Body Electric. Also you can lose the Jenny character. Can you say bugging. A good movie but missing some crucial bits. If remakes continue like this what is going to happen to my adored Footloose.

To the people who wrote You Can’t Stop The Beat. Thanks for making the happiest song ever. Yes it’s totally cheesy and I’ll never know all the words. But whenever I hear it I smile and have to dance. Kudos.

To the Hollywood executives. Please whatever other remakes you do, do not touch Sound of Music. For me there will be no other Maria, no other Captain Von Trapp and definitely no other Liezel and the Nazi in the gazebo. If you must and I mean absolutely must remake it, will you please keep the Lonely Goat Herd sequence. Everyone loves singing puppets.

To the Mamma Mia! peeps. I am still not happy about James Bond singing ABBA songs. But I have learnt to deal. I am unhappy about you guys leaving out The Name of the Game and Under Attack. And I do believe there were much more shirtless hotties in the stage production. Not sure if you can bring out a re-mastered version but see what you can do.

To Hans Christian Anderson. Thanks. If you hadn’t written the Little Mermaid and if Disney hadn’t stolen it, I would never have heard the song Kiss The Girl. I can still watch it now and suddenly am feeling like my younger self. Happy. In love with Prince Eric. And totally dreaming to become a mermaid when I grow up.

Monday's Mantra

This week is all about finding money between the sofa cushions.
I believe I'm going to stand up for myself.
I'm addicted to Will & Grace. Working my way through the series.
I wish choosing and outfit for work could be so much simpler.
I jealous of people who don't have 357 follow-up emails in their inbox.

Monday's Mantra

This week has only 4 working days! Hurrah!
I believe I'll be filthy, stinking rich one day.
I'm addicted to Milo, hot water bottles and the Will and Grace boxset.
I wish life was a little bite easier for a little while.
I'm jealous of people who can afford the good housing in Gardens, Cape Town.
Soundtrack for the week you can't hurry love, money or a decent flat.

It's A (Loooong Easter) Weekend Baby!

Although there has been no progress on my greater goals I am in a fabulous mood.

My body is still impersonating that of a heifer, my job still sucks and I am still single. Also my roots badly need to be done. But as my bank balance has clearly been attacked by money pirates and my funds have disappeared I will be wandering the streets with half a head of chocolate brown hair and roots that look like they have been dunked in a coffee pot. Sexy huh!

On the bright side, it's a fabulous day in Cape Town, it's an extra long weekend and I have awesome plans. For starters, the Gay Best Friend is here from Durban. Cue lots of giggling and checking out cute boys. It's Easter, so a limitless supply of chocolate has descended upon my house. On Monday, is the Coke Zero Fest. Oasis, Snow Patrol, Panic at the Disco and a whole host of SA bands will be playing. I'm going with Blue Eyes, the Blonde Princess and the Sports Fan. I plan on attending in my best Kate Moss-at-Glastonbury outfit and being considerably drunk throughout. Also I get to finally see Brendan Urie from Panic in the flesh. He'll finally figure out we're meant to be.

And the other reason I'm also super happy, not forgetting the Will & Grace boxset I have yet to devour, is my heart songs. Inspired by Seth Rotherham's plea for his readers to send him their favourite gym songs, I have decided to post my favourite happy songs. These are the songs I could listent o all day and not get sick of. And no matter what, they always make me smile!
