Rcaffe

Last week was another installment of Coffee Club. We ventured to Rcaffe in Long Street to get our caffiene fix on.

I've been here before but I've passed it a few times on a pub crawl. As it's open super early (06h30 peeps) it closes relatively early. Probably because the staff need to get to back around 20h00 to wake up that early. So I pass it but I've never gone inside.

From the first steps in, it seemed like the place to be. For 7am on Friday. It was pumping. It's quite big and almost every table was full. Service is kinda hard to explain. It was hard to get our waiter's attention, granted that the place was booming but it was efficient. Not the most friendly staff, it all felt a bit brisk. I realise they had lots to do and no one particualrly likes one of those too-friendly waiters but it was lacking.

The coffee was quite delicious I thought. The perfect way to start the day. Some of us ate breakfast. The food menu was extensive. But a little bit pricey. On the plus side, the food came out quickly. But I think I still overpaid for my teeny, tiny english muffin. And at the end, when we asked for the bill we were slapped with a service charge. I get that a lot of places have service charges for more than 6 people but this was breakfast. Also no heads up? We are not el cheapos but come on? For a table of 6 when half of us don't eat? Not a reason to go back.

If you're up super early and just keen for a coffee - and have a small party ;) - then definitely try them out. If anything, the place is pretty, quirky and has a mean cuppa.

Oumeul Bakkery

Whenever we have Coffee Club we always have a good time. And it seems that that's evident to other peeps too. We've got some new members!

Our first outing of 2013 was to Oumeul Bakkery. This little bakery is the sister to the original Oumeul in Riviersonderend, which I'm told is somewhere on the N2. I cannot say I've been myself. Apparently they must have a massive following as their "tagline" is all about their famous pies.

As it was breakfast time we settled for our usual round of lattes and some more appropriate breakfast treats. Although I don't really see anything wrong with eating pies for breakfast ;)

Apart from the pies, there is a small but good breakfast menu. For lunch there are a range of salads and sandwiches which all sound devine. And then of course there are the pies. I spotted a board with the usual chicken, steak and all that. But there are some divine-sounding ones I *need* to try like venison and bobotie. Luckily it's around the corner from my new office so I foresee many lunch-time trips.

As it's so close I may have already sampled one or two of their pastries. They sell mini tartlets, milktarts, pasties and cakes. I happen to know that the pecan pie can change lives.

And then if you're keen to pick up some home made produce, there is a shelf dedicated to Brenda's products. If you've ever had the balsamic glaze then you understand how amazing these babies are.

Oumeul Bakkery is open Monday to Saturday so you can almost always get your pie fix. Weekdays they start their thang at 06h30 and on Saturday at 07h00.

This Week I...

...went to Kalk Bay.

A little disclaimer before I start this post. I am the youngest of four children and there are big gaps between us siblings. So while I know my parents love me, there are many things they’ve done and seen before I was born. Therefore by the time I came along, there wasn’t much need to do these things again. For example road trips to exotic places were not high on the list of things to do on a Sunday.

So when I announced to my besties that I think a trip to Kalk Bay was in order, a chorus of “You’ve never been to Kalk Bay” erupted. Yes it’s true, please refer back to the above disclaimer.

This Sunday armed with a whole bunch of cool people, we headed to the vibrant fishing village for some brunch and browsing. After a delish meal and milkshake at The Home of Waffles and Pancakes, we took a stroll through the town.

If unlike me, no one has told you about this gem of a town, I suggest you make your way there. It’s a fabulous mix of restaurants, deli’s, antique shops, vintage shops, décor/furniture stores and art galleries.

In & Out

I saw Ashwini do this over on her blog Clearly Beautiful and thought I’d shamelessly copy it.

In

Sales. Lots of fabulous clothes and homeware items are so much cheaper. Need to hit the shops.

Scrambled eggs on toast. My ideal choice would be with white bread and creamy eggs but since I’m trying to make lifestyle changes, I’ll settle Low GI bread and no sauces.

My new maxi dress. Have yet to wear it but just looking at it in my wardrobe is enough to get me excited.

Blue eye shadow. It makes an all-black ensemble pop.

Out

Money. Seriously. I am all out of it. One of the drawbacks about getting paid early in December.

The scar on my forehead. I burnt my skin whilst trying to curl my hair. I now have a ugly scar that makeup cannot cover up. On the plus side, my hair looked great, nice and natural-looking waves.

Push Play not sending us new DVDs. I saw Hairspray is next on our list. How can you deprive me of that? I want to get my Zac Efron on.

Weekend News

On Friday the girls and gays went to see The September Issue. I think I love Anna Wintour even more. No matter if you’re interested in fashion or even care about Vogue magazine, you need to see this movie.

On Saturday, it was my birthday! I got given a lovely present by my roomie and fellow skinny bitch and then we went out for breakfast. We also did a little window shopping and found some amazing dresses. Only problem is, we’re crazy broke and it was the hardest thing to put them back because we need to spend our money on food and petrol. Too bad those dresses can’t do that.

Later that day, the gays came over again and we had a getting ready party for that evening. We started the night at Boo Radleys with friends and families. I was totally spoilt. Not only by the great cosmos. Not too sweet and not too sour but perfect. And I got amazing gifts. It was awesome. So awesome in fact that I think I may have to celebrate it again in six months. Birthdays totally need anniversaries. After cocktails, we headed to the Dubliner where drinks were doubled, I hurt Blue Eyes when I tried to do the jumping lift from Dirty Dancing and almost slapped a girl who kept dancing in our area. “Bitch, that’s my song. I need to break it down.”

The next morning, however, was not so awesome. The last time I was that hung-over was the year before, also at my birthday. I did not feel good. It got so bad I had to go home to my parents house so my mom could look after me. In the end I had to sleep it off and later that evening when I eventually came to, I was ravenous. After 10 hours of sleep, I ate everything in my way. I’m back to feeling normal but am still pretty dehydrated so have attached a large water bottle to my side.

Hope everyone else’s weekend was just as fabulous.

My Holiday

This year I had one of those amazing holidays that I never wanted to end. Now I realise that sounds a bit silly. Who would ever want a holiday to end. But sometimes, mostly when I was studying I would get a bit reckless when I had so many days free. This year I only had two weeks so I decided I'd make the most of it. And what better place to spend it than Cape Town.

What I did:

*I finished my xmas shopping in record time.

*I walked to most places in town, burning off calories and saving petrol.

*I watched Avatar and although the graphics were amazing I thought the plot and script were eh.

*I went to the beach on an overcast day and burnt.

*I along with Blue Eyes hosted our first ever Christmas party, aptly titled Christmas Ho Ho Hos and Bros.

*I went to the gym and had the best workouts because I didn't have to rush.

*I found out where all the cheap breakfast spots are. Carmellos in Kloof street have a great special on btw.

*I watched 2012 and cheered along with the rest of the cinema when Cape Town was the place they all sought refuge.

*I went to the beach on a scorching day and got a nice tan.

*We had the most amazing burgers at Royale.

*I tried to master my new curling iron. It's not going too well. Half my hair has these amazing waves while the rest look like little girl curls.

*I had one of the best cosmopolitans at FTV. But I really do not like the remodelling.

*I saw The Rebound and have found myself in love with Justin Bartha.

*I watched the sunset at Signal Hill.

*I counted in New Years with my gays.

*I ate way too much carbs.

*I went to the aquarium and saw how slow the sharks swim. I could totally outswim them.

Hope everyone else had a faboosh holiday.

Working For The Weekend

When the weather’s good (and you’ve just been paid), weekends tend to be fabulous. This weekend was one of those. On Saturday, with the gym being firmly ignored, we went to try out the new Lazari in the Cape Quarter. For some reason, breakfast is always better when you get an outside table and are surrounded by some beautiful people.

Then it was off to my niece’s birthday party. When it comes to kids, I always thought I’d had two, a girl named Boleyn and a boy called Conor. They’d be ridiculously good looking and smart and Boleyn wouldn’t have the hair problems I have to endure. I’d also send them to one of those uber posh schools and they’d learn five languages and do a collection of extra-curricular activities. Witnessing 25 kids high on sugar, dressed up for Halloween and fighting over cupcakes was enough to put that fantasy to rest. In the end though, aided by good food and lots of champagne, we managed to have a good time. This good time was spent behind a closed door, away from the noise and watching the 5th season of The Office.

Later that night, after some serious prepping, we headed out for some boy hunting. We decided that instead of complaining that no one loves us, we would be brave and make them love us. In other words, we would actually go up to guys and make the first move. This was a lot easier after we finished a bottle of champers and put on Wonder bras. The venue in question was The Dubliner, known to all of Cape Town as an awesome place to get drunk and dance to old music. This is also now known as boy hunting ground. Most of the patrons are foreign, which is great if you’re a sucker for accents. We danced the night away and then got kicked out when the lights came on and the last round was served. They say dancing is a good workout. Judging by the pain in my legs, we must have done the marathon equivalent. It shouldn’t be this hard to climb stairs. I’m hoping a gym session later will help.

Other highlights include an amazing steak lunch, some episodes of House and a party pack from Saturday’s party. Those were reason enough to go to a child’s birthday party!

Hope everyone else had a good one.

Vodka = Bad

So this past weekend, the Skinny Bitches decided to open up our doors and a dozen bottles of wine for our housewarming. Luckily Cape Town was blessed with great weather so we could use our balcony for the first time. We were also incredibly lucky to have some amazing friends and coworkers, all of whom brought us awesome presents. You guys rock. Seriously it was like Christmas all over again. The only bad part of it all, the vodka. This is a warning to everyone out there, do not drink multiple shots of neat vodka, no matter how cute it is when it’s all wrapped up or even if it’s flavoured. Because the next morning you will suffer. If you ever needed proof there were evils things in the world, here it is. And the worst part is I am still suffering. All I want is my bed.

Despite our heads spinning and hanging like an alkie, we still managed to keep a breakfast date the next morning. Whilst wearing dark glasses of course! This breakfast date gave us the opportunity to answer the question, where are all the hot men? Answer: having breakfast together. Despite feeling really fragile, we were still able to check out the hot boys. And the best bit there was a boy to suit everyone’s taste. And they were all sitting together. It was the best remedy two hungover skinny bitches could get. There was the cute one who’d make you a hot water bottle when you have cramps, there was the hot one who you’d feel was too good looking to be yours, there was the hipster one who was so cutting edge it hurts, there was the dirty sexy one who you’d want to tie up and do bad things to and then there was one with the best smile and the type of hair you just want to stroke. It was such a mission to leave the restaurant. Particularly because our flat resembled an advertisement for a bomb site.

I am so happy the day is drawing to a close. Now I can go home and do what I have been thinking about all day, have some pizza, watch Hairspray and sleep. Good times.

Crazy Girl on Balcony

What a weekend. And I mean that in a good way. Well, almost. It started out great but then there were some weird moments. And now, I'm sitting in Blue Eye's cubicle while she is working and I'm pretending to offer to help her. I keep muttering shame, you look busy, yet I never get up to actually do something. ;) Since I'm clearly not going to help with her advertising admin, I'd better recap the weeken starting with Friday...

Friday was abosultely fabulous as we had our first official dinner party in the flat. But I do use those two words loosely. Basically The Gays came over for dinner and we watched Will & Grace! On Saturday we all got up at the crack of dawn to join a friend for a birthday breakfast. The best part was the weather in Cape Town. It was sunny and warm and we got to walk to breakfast. Good times. After breakfast we strolled around town, did a little shopping and then headed home.

Blue Eyes left to go and gamble her next rent cheque away at the casino and I stayed home. Everything seemed fine and rosy until 5 the next morning. This is where the title of this blog Crazy Girl on Balcony comes from. I was awoken to the loud banging of what sounded like a crazy person outside my bedroom window. On closer inspection, in my blurry-eyed state I thought I saw Blue Eyes standing on the balcony demanding to be let in. It was only later that I realised, Crazy person was in fact not Blue Eyes but a terrified and hysterical girl seeking help. Firstly I have to admit, I was weary I had heard of scams where they prey on woman using another woman to enlist sympathy. I had premonitions that Blue Eyes was going to come home, find me knocked out and most of our posessions gone. But nevertheless I opened the door and that's when it all began.

Turns out this girl was from Ireland, she was a volunteer and she had gone home with a guy she had met at a club despite her friends better judgement. She had blacked out, woke up and started to panic. The guy got aggressive, she got scared and legged it. She left her bag in someone's garden, she couldn't find her shoes and still she ran. Without sounding too preachy, ladies please do not ever do this. if you really want to get laid, do it at the club or at your place where there is someone you can call on if things go bad.

For the next hour I tried to calm her down, we called the police, the Irish embassy, her brother, the police again, her brother again and then we were picked up by the police. I had no desires to go to a police station. In fact the only time I had ever been previously was when I needed my ID certified for my matric exams. I'm so afraid I go there and they all look at me accusingly. I have catholic guilt and trust me, if I'm there too long I will confess to something. Saying that I couldn't leave her alone, so this was around 6.30 in the morning, I left to go to the Cape Town police station. After a couple of hours, dealing with many detectives and captains, some nice and some not nice at all, we managed to get somewhere. We also managed to get hold of her friends who were staying at a nearby hostel and they came to visit and comfort her. She turned out to not be so crazy in the end. I called her a couple of hours later and she was doing much better.

After 4 hours of weirdness I left the police station and went out for breakfast. French toast was very welcomed after all of that. The best part of the day, however was coming home to Blue Eye's cooking. She is amazing and her sunday roast was awesome. Thanks roomie. Today, we decided to inject a bit of culture into our lives and had fancy coffees, planned our housewarming and a trip to the museum. For all those in Cape Town, it's free on certain public holidays but only on the actual day. And now, we're chilling at her offices. She is working, I'm regaling my weekend tales. Good times.

Hope everyone out there had a tres eventual weekend too.

2 New Contenders

Just a quick update to say that, although we have professed our love for The Place Near Beleza, there are now two more places that we're willing to apply for.

The first one is a few minutes walk from Kloof Street, which means it shall be named The Place Near Arnolds. Kloof street also has the Lifestyle centre, Saigon and I could walk to the gym as it's advantages. Unfortunately this place currently smells like stale smoke (we're hoping that will change), only has built in cupboards in one bedroom and offers no parking. There is ample parking in the street though.

The other place is also in Tamboerskloof and is now referred to as The Place Near Liquorice and Lime. You may remember it from here. Well we had another view, it was much cleaner than before and you cannot beat that view.

So we have three places we wouldn't mind calling home. All still need a Skinny Bitches touch and some decorating. But all will suffice till we marry the boys from Gossip Girl and move into penthouses.

Have a great weekend!
