It's Finally Here!

After years of planning, saving, stressing, rejoicing and agonising today is the day I leave Cape Town for Canada.

I'll be documenting as much as I can, so keep on reading.

Wish me luck!

Some of the Best Advice...

For your bleh days...

“Sometimes you just have to put on lip gloss and pretend to be psyched.”

For the days when people think you're a little emotional....

“Some people say, “Never let them see you cry.” I say, if you’re so mad you could just cry, then cry. It terrifies everyone.”

For those days you get labelled bossy and controlling and really you're getting shit done...

"I just love bossy women. I could be around them all day. To me, bossy is a not pejorative term at all. It means somebody's passionate and engaged and ambitious and doesn't mind leading."

For when you need to reevaluate your body issues...

“You look like you look, and be comfortable. What are you going to do, be hungry every single day to make other people happy? That’s just dumb."

Nuff Said.

The Internet is Hilarious

Of course we all know the interwebs are funny. They keep me out of work daily ;)
But did you know it could be this damn humourous. And it's all thanks to the Skinny Gossip that I'm ROTFL.

This blog was originally started as a gossip site with a "snarky counter-view to a culture that glorifies excess consumption" according to its owner. So basically she (I'm guessing it's a girl) wanted to provide satire on a subject that is touchy. This would have worked if the site wasn't so shamelessly Pro-Ana, in my opinion anyway.

The blog post that has peeps up in arms - and me dying of laughter - is the one concerning Kate Upton. Want to know what the SG thinks of her? She's fat, y'all. And that's why I giggled.

"She looks thick, vulgar, almost pornographic – and she is a solid 30 lbs too heavy for this outfit.""

"Huge thighs, NO waist, big fat floppy boobs, terrible body definition – she looks like a squishy brick. Is this what American women are “striving” for now? The lazy, lardy look?"

Look at this "fat ass"! Are you kidding me?!

I'm not trying to be a douche here but when you have forums like "Starving Tips of The Day" and headlines such as "Britney Spears Chunks Out Again" and "Barbara Palvin Has Gained Weight" I start to wonder if you are providing social commentary or just being a troll. I have read the posts listed above but haven't read the entire site. The forum above is currently closed because the owner wants to review, edit and possibly rename it. So I cannot say that I know all of what's going on in there. The problem to me is that instead of providing satire and snark alĂ  Dlisted or The Supercial, it comes across as vitirol.

The owner has updated the blog to say it will be changing. And that she too suffered with food issues. As someone who constantly has weight issues and a food obsession, I can understand why she prefers to attack rather than jest. It's easier that way.

If she does continue with her blog, I just hope that there's no more of this nonsense and she actually puts the inspiration into thinspiration.

OKAY, rant over.

DIY Fun

For some reason, the office I work in is the worst place for a mug to survive. Seriously, over the past couple of years I've seen mugs of all sizes, colours and with company branding either break or disappear.
I'm not sure what is the reason but this place is where mugs either commit suicide or are put to death.

Now this time, instead of paying a fancy branding company to put our company logo and our names on mugs, we're doing it ourselves. I know that sounds like something awful you'd find on Regretsy but it's a lot more fab than that.

Thanks to Buzzfeed, I found that if you use a magic marker on a mug and then bake for 30 minutes in an oven at 180 degrees, you can personalise your mug. How awesome - and easy - is that.

So armed with all the supplies, the peeps in the office have been busy customizing our mugs.

And I couldn't resist.

Win With Champagne Taittinger SA

Picture the scene…you’re on the French Riveria. You’re basking in the sunlight while a gentle breeze makes your silk HermĂ©s scarf flutter. You’ve kicked off your Louboutins and motion for a nearby waiter to bring you a glass of something chilled. You grip your Waterford crystal and take a glass of vintage Taittinger and then the party really begins.

Skinny Bitches is very excited to announce the start of a fabulous competition. If that’s the lifestyle you’re after, then look no further. Okay, we can’t really promise you the whole paradise shebang but we can give away one ah-mazing hamper that can definitely change a few things.

This can all be yours, mmmm!

Champagne Taittinger South Africa is giving one Skinny Bitches – In The Making reader a chance to win the following
*One bottle of Taittinger (the preferred brand of Grace Kelly, Truman Capote, James Bond and the Baftas and Tony Awards)
*One Taittinger Ice Bucket to make the rest of your champers feel inferior
*Two Taittinger flutes to live the high life when your bottle’s finished
*One Taittinger stopper to keep the fizzle even if the party’s fizzed out

And to win all of this you ask? All you have to do is send a mail to skinnybsinthemaking@gmail.com with your name, contact number and address. For extra entries you can follow the peeps on Twitter (go on, they’ve just signed up and need fans) and like their Facebook page. Just drop that in the mail.

This could be you next week, if you were slightly less-elegant and a dude!

The competition will run until Thursday, 24 May 2012. The winner and my new bestie (you’ll need to share that champers with someone) will be announced next Friday. Best of all? Anyone from South Africa can enter.

Good luck bitches!Ex-Oh! Ex-Oh!

Things I'll Never Do Again: Salsa Dancing

So the last night I was “tricked” by my flatmate, fellow skinny bitch and all-round fabulous person to go salsa dancing.

Here’s the thing about me and partnered-up dancing; I cannot do it.

Seriously. I’m all awkward and I look at my feet too much and am so self-conscious, it’s not pretty to watch. Despite my foreboding that this was going to be the worst thing I’ve ever done, and I’m including the time I sang karaoke, I put on my favourite heels and a dress that would lift up when I did turns. I may be bad at choreography but I still have Dirty Dancing fantasies. And off we went.

This is how I thought I'd look. Not even close in reality.

We paid and settled in to watch the intermediate class before our beginner class. And that’s when I wanted to throw up. What we witnessed was dancing of professional skill and no one messed a step. I was assured that our class would be nothing to worry about. I nodded and started to look for emergency exits.

When we started, I admit the warm-up and basic steps were fun. I could do these. And at one point I actually managed to let go of my issues and swing my hips and look kinda like I knew what I was doing. Then we started to partner up. This is where shit got real. As I partnered with the various men (a goldmine if you’re looking for boys that can dance ladies) I realised they all had a similar problem. They were dancing with me. Some were very nice about me messing up the steps, one wasn’t. A couple were worse than me (thanks for small mercies) but then again the guy’s are doing all the hard work.

After what I consider torture, we all formed a line again and did our warm down. This was my chance to excel. And let me tell you Baby has nothing on me when it comes to turning and clapping my hands to the music.

One day. One day.

This experience has taught me many things:
1. I will may for my own humiliation.
2. Nothing can prepare you for a foreigner to shout “No!” when you get the steps wrong. Sorry dude! Didn’t realise I was in the way of your Strictly Ballroom ambitions.
3. Bad dancing cannot be solved by my usual way out of awkies situations with boys; wearing a low-cut top and lots of eye makeup.
4. This could be where a lot of the cute men are hiding. And they can move or at least want to. Major points.
5. Having a good partner can make all the difference.
6. Salsa is great cardio.
7. I’ll probably never do this again :)

Gusto Cafeteria

We started out coffee club with Gusto Cafeteria in Hatfield Street, Gardens. I've driven past the place a few times but never went inside. Mostly because it always looked close. Some browsing on the interwebs and I found out it closes at 15h30 but bonus it opens at 07h00. This is the perfect time for a pre-work coffee date because you don't have to rush off if you start work at 09h00.

Gusto is in a cute little courtyard and seems to be a favourite of the business peeps who work in the same building. It's also near a yoga studio so it explains all the women in stretchy pants. They also have a fab special where you can order any coffee and muffin for 20 ronds before 09h00. Sadly I was on a diet and missed out on the fresh muffins but they looked and smelled amazing.

The coffee was delicious (and organic) but the only fault I had was that I ordered a skinny latte but they brought me a skinny flat white. Yes I know, first world problems but there is a difference. I did like that they had fat-free milk which most places don't seem to stock. 2% is probably the reason my thighs are still huge ;) They also seem to have an amazing lunch menu which is updated daily on their FB page. On Wednesdays and Saturdays they have an organic produce market if you're keen to try it out.

Welcome To The Coffee Club

Out of all the things I love, coffee and Cape Town are among the best. Or Top 5; maybe Top 10 because I haven’t thought about all my boyband crushes, my GHD, 30 Rock and cheese. Let's just say I have mad love for Cape Town coffee shops.

As I discovered recently there are more and more fabulous places to get my daily fix, I thought I’d start a little club and go and visit them. So armed with my besties and a camera, we are on a mission to try out as many and as new places coffee shops as we can.

We even have our own fabulous logo designed by one of my favourite peeps in the world. He's really good and if you ever need his design help, you can check out his portfolio here.

I'll be posting the first of our adventures later this week.

Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me

As any Skinny Bitch in the making knows, if you want to be on top-of-the-world fabulous you have to cover all aspects of your life. So while I’m still searching for the perfect job (Bill Gates, adopt me I’d be the perfect trust fund child) and I’m waiting for Bradley Cooper to get his shit together and propose I work on the other stuff.

At the moment, I’m busy working on the skinny part of the skinny bitch I hope to become. The bitch part has come along nicely ;) Obviously banning carbs from my diet and increasing my gym visits from none to a few a week has done some good. Now I am not one of those girls that skimps on beauty products and procedures. I visit spas, I dry loofah before I shower and I even bought paraffin wax for home pedicures.

Now when it comes to products I remain loyal to the ones that work and smell nice but that doesn’t mean I’m not above using other products. While I’m too afraid to go out to a bar by myself or try scuba diving I can be crazy adventurous with my beauty products. I’m like the Tiger Woods in that respect; I got the ones that I love at home but I’m always on the lookout for new ones on the side.

So when a little bird told me about a ‘little’ site that boasted fab new body products that smelt nice and are natural and all that jazz, I immediately requested some samples. Body Thrills is a collection of handmade, natural products that are designed to make you feel all wholesome and fabulous. Founded by Tamaryn Watkins, the site has gone from a blog to a nifty ecommerce site with user-friendly features and online shopping facilities.

I was lucky enough to try out a few of the products. This is me trying not to eat the Lemon Nougat and Honey Coconut Body Polish. This BP is a fab granular exfoliator that isn’t too harsh on the skin and smells like baked goods. I don’t think I need to say more.

This is me having a moment with the Lemongrass and Juniper Berry body butter. There is something about lemongrass, I just can’t get enough.

And finally, this is me pondering whether I should bathe in the Pina Colado Body Polish or pop it into a cocktail glass with some ice.

If you’re looking for the some great body treats, head on over to Body Thrills; they have a wide range of products (for men and preggos too) and even have some great specials just in time for Christmas.

Sacrebleu!

So I haven't blogged, or tweeted or even updated my Facebook status in awhile. The reason being that things have all gotten a bit too much and I was a bit down.

Money issues, work issues, family issues, etc. It all takes over and all of a sudden, you've become a Negative Nancy. And while I believe in the redeeming powers of a good rant, I didn't want to spread all that negativity. There's only so much sympathy your readers can have without getting sick of it.

Thinking about my Thailand holiday helped get me back to happy.

But now I can report I've finally gotten back to my happy place. And I have shitloads to say ;)

Dear Future Boyfriend, Part Five

Dear Future Boyfriend

You get different types of people. You get the kind who are spontaneous and do things on weekends. Things which require them to actually leave the comfort of the couch and experience things. Then you get the people who relish in the comfort of the couch. I would like to think that I am in the middle. It’s more truthful to say that I am ¾ of the way on the couch and the other quarter is desperate to be out there. Therefore FB I need you to be one of those people. The active kind of person that makes lazy people hate them. It’s sort of like the skinny girl who says things like “Sometimes I forget to eat.” Anyway I need you to encourage me to visit places other than a food market and to do spontaneous active things like take advantage of a nice day by going hiking or to the beach. You see I want to do all those things but somewhere between the Parks & Recreation marathon and that bag of salt and vinegar chips that will not eat itself I get lazy.

In my mind, I am pretty gangsta. Seriously I think my knowing all the words to Funky Cold Medina and having watched Dangerous Minds a gazillion times equals thug life. And I’m going to need you to go along with it. So when I quote rap lyrics without knowing what the hell they’re talking about and start describing things as ‘dope’ ‘crunk’ and ‘bling’ remember why you love me and ignore it.

It seems there are various ways to discern someone’s personality whether it be their reaction to animals or the way they sleep or the music they listen to. I like to do it by seeing how you treat waiters. There are many things I think I could excel at:
Dancer in a music video - yes
Ice-cream taster - yes
Chuck Bass’ girlfriend oh hell yes!
One of the things I would suck at is being a waiter. And it’s not something I would ever deign to do. Therefore I treat most servers with an unprecedented amount of respect and tips. Also I’ve read Kitchen Confidential and I really don’t want anyone to mishandle my food. If we experience horrible service, you have every right to bring it up. But if you think being mean to waiters is something that makes you appear macho and sexy, oh boy do you have no idea how fast those knickers are coming up.

Get Ready For The Weekend - Competition Time

You know how people tend to ask you what you’re doing on the weekend and you’re all like “It’s only Tuesday. I haven’t thought about it yet.”

And then all of a sudden you cannot stop thinking about it. Suddenly your fingers are all tingly and you start sweating. I have no weekend plans. I have no weekend plans. You start rocking back and forth and wonder when did it get all dark and cold. Okay maybe it’s not that bad but you still end up in a bit of a flurry.

Luckily I have the solution. At least for this weekend.

If you’re in the Cape Town area and just love, love, love visiting markets, listening to live music, and mixing with some of the most fabulous, creative peeps in the city, then you’re in luck. The first ever Bay Harbour Market Jol is happening on 11 June and Skinny Bitches have a couple of sets of double tickets to give away.

All you have to do to win tickets to this amazing event is send one little email to skinnysbinthemaking@gmail.com. It’s that easy and then you can be one of those smug people with weekend plans that send others into a panic :)

Good luck bitches!

Things That Make Me Happy

*Being able to fit into my skinny jeans again.
If you’ve been following my Twitter stream, you’ll know that the Skinny Bitches undertook some drastic measures to lose some weight. Before you get all worried, it wasn’t anything like surgery or an eating disorder. Mostly because you know we have no money for liposuction. We decided we needed a little kick to get us motivated to really start eating healthy. So we decided to do the Royal Danish Hospital diet. If you’ve heard of it, you’ll know it’s pure protein and can make you lose up to 10 kgs. If you don’t know about it, it’ll basically put you off eggs, steak and carrots but at the end of the day you can wear your skinny jeans again. Which is exactly what happened to me. After 13 days of avoiding carbs, resisting all cravings and repeating “skinny bitch in the making” I finally weighed myself and found I was 5 kgs lighter which translates into fitting into my skinny jeans again! Hurrah!

*Cooking Again
After two weeks of bland steak and eggs, I couldn’t wait to start cooking again. And because of Mother’s Day yesterday I had the perfect excuse. I had to make a little something special for my momma (and myself of course) for all the stuff she does for me. So I opted for some butter chicken. I’ve made it before and loved it but this time I decided to go a little bit more extravagant and make a new version. There was also some garlic bread in lieu of naan bread. After dieting nothing tastes as good as home-cooked meal.

*Planning a Holiday
Nothing’s booked yet but there’s been lots of saving and getting bikini ready. Skinny Bitches will be hitting Thailand at the end of the year with some besties. Whoop Whoop!

I Don't Care What My Teachers Say...

...I'm gonna be a supermodel.

A little while ago I mentioned that I took part in a photoshoot for O Magazine in December. And now, months later the issue is finally out.

Thanks to my years of idolizing (read stalking) Style Guide Cape Town, I think she finally got sick of me peering at her from windows, "bumping" into her at fashion events and finding out her direct line that she thought this would shut me up. Just kidding, those things didn't happen or at least in that order ;)

I was lucky enough to be chosen along with Dimi from Style Scoop and Miss Milli B to represent blogger and city style. I got to wear a fabulous 50s-inspired outfit from David West and some extra high heels, which is always a plus.

Here is the result:

Singleton Awareness Day

A little while back, Skinny Bitches were invited to attend the Singleton Awareness Day at the Pepper Club.

Now I’ll admit I do not always wait patiently for love to arrive, there have been many times when I’ve cried into my frozen yoghurt whilst a Katherine Heigel chick flick played screaming “Why doesn’t anyone love me”. But these times are few and far between and mostly I spend my time enjoying the single life.

So when the absolutely fabulous Cosmic Girl decided to dedicate a date to honouring singles after all that hoohah of Valentine’s Day, we couldn’t resist.

The evening started with some delish appletinis made with Singleton whiskey and snacks.

Then we were lucky enough to have our make-up done by the lovely ladies of Benefit. After topping up on another drink and popcorn, we were all ushered into the cinema to watch the ultimate chick flick Bridget Jones Diary.

Halfway through the movie, we were spoiled with even more wine and snacks. But the best part had to be the charity auction, you know for the kids ;) Two outrageously good-looking bachelors offering a luxury meal and ride in a Rolls Royce were auctioned off with one Skinny Bitch doing her bit for the kids and winning that amazing prize.

Thanks so much to the Pepper Club for hosting us and for a fabulous evening.
